Getting Enough Sleep Can Save Your Life this Memorial Day

Whether the beach, the mountains or the bright lights of the city beckons, Memorial Day traditionally kicks off the summer travel season. This year, AAA Travel projects 36.1 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. With more than eight in ten travelers driving to their destinations, it's important to stay alert and safe.

According to The National Sleep Foundation (NSF), the best way to avoid drowsy driving is to do everything possible before you get in your vehicle: get adequate sleep on a regular basis and practice good sleep habits. If you have sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, seek treatment.

If you must drive long distances this holiday weekend, the NSF has these tips to stay alert and arrive alive.

•  Get a good night's sleep before any long drive.

•  Get off the road if you notice any of the warning signs of fatigue.

•  Find a safe place to take a 15- to 20-minute nap.

•  Drive with a friend who is a licensed driver. A passenger who remains awake can help watch for signs of fatigue in the driver and can take a turn driving, if necessary.

•  Always wear your seatbelt.
